Like the reviewer above, I was puzzled as to why Criterion would release this film in beefy frame format when everything else about the edition seemed so meticulously struck, so I plan other people might be alive to in Criterion’s explanation as to ask why this DVD copy was in the plump frame format.

Even though Criterion released the so called widescreen edition previously (1.66:1 letterboxed), each time they re-strike a current product, they will continually deem how the specific movie is supposed to be seen. What I was told was that even though most Europeans probably saw the 1.66:1 widescreen version in the theaters when it was released, it was their notion through a lot of research and interviews, that Godard framed, and meant for the film to be in 1.33:1 - and it was the releasing company that decided on the 1.66:1 format themselves. They told me at Criterion, that neither is necessarily irascible, but that they decided to go with what they believed most safe the vision of it’s maker.

I bought the DVD after hearing their explanation, and you will most likely agree with them when you understanding this version. From the balance of titles and words on the hide, to the procedure that shots are constructed (such as a sequence which is obviously intentionally quiet of only gesturing hands on the edge of the frame during a conversation) I reflect their argument is just on the sign. Remember in this season of widescreen fever, it shouldn’t be widescreen for the sake of widescreen, but to note the thing the design it was intended to be seen.

On the aspect ratio. I deem Steve Rose, below, is absolutely upright. I have the widescreen VHS and the Criterion DVD and have hasten them together and the DVD is obviously giving the beefy print image. The W/screen tape is only widescreen because it crops the top and the bottom of the image, giving a very shrimp composition to every shot. The DVD has a precision of framing that is always spot-on (as one would request from Raoul Coutard) . Not only that but the VHS tape is washed out; it lacks strong blacks, and has next to no inequity - an considerable feature in a film that is an hommage to American film noir. The DVD is, all up, a model of care and committment to a improbable movie. Now we can behold it as Godard intended. (In particular, we can again watch clearly that the synchronised swimmers are stabbing the executed men to death - something that is not determined on the VHS tape.) This DVD is unruffled listed as widescreen long after they have had it pointed out to them that it is not! As are many of the other films. Buyer beware!)

Buy,Download, Or Stream Alphaville - Criterion Collection! Click Here

The film itself probably needs no further introduction. It is a heavenly and shaded *comedy* on humanity and Humanism, touched, as all Godard’s films of this period were, by his tangible treasure for Anna Karina - whom he photographs as if he were trying to remember forever. The poetry of Paul Eluard is dilapidated to fantastic enact in her awakening, and the film is filled with vivid visual humour - like the swimmers, mentioned above. A gorgeous film, and one that seems even more intrepid and fresh now than it did when it came out - a dim reflection on the modern place of cinema, where even alternative films are trying so hard to please.

I popped in this DVD very wary of how I would feel about an weak childhood current after years of not seeing it. Well, I was pleasantly surprised that the film is unexcited a lot of fun. Yes, a lot of the effects (blue cloak, etc.) are unconvincing and present their age, but geeeez, the movie’s almost 40 years conventional so what can you demand. This was a valid stunner in it’s day and Harryhausen’s stop-motion sequences unexcited outshine any dead CGI accomplish in today’s cookie-cutter movies (unprejudiced examine at the dreadful new TV remake with all those cheesy computer effects — there’s no contest!) The skeleton battle is most famed, but I have a special fondness for Talos which was the first scene that caught my observe as a young kid on Saturday afternoon TV in the unhurried 60’s. Satisfied to search for that “Jason” mild has it’s magic (along with some acceptable campiness) and the DVD is a nice presentation (there are some limited flaws to the print materials and grain in some scenes) . The Harryhausen interview (with John Landis) is racy and the current trailer is also included on the DVD.

I’ve reviewed quite a few films featuring the work of special effects artist Ray Harryhausen and found reasons to like them all, but Jason and the Argonauts (1963) features some of his most wonderful effects, and is considered to be one of the greatest fantasy pictures ever made. Would I say it’s the greatest? No, but in terms of influencing many, including a majority of special effects artists in the business today, this film is a cinematic landmark, and deserves to be treated as such. Produced by long time Harryhausen collaborator Charles Schneer (The Valley of Gwangi, The Golden Voyage of Sinbad, Clash of the Titans) and directed by Don Chaffey (One Million Years B.C., Pete’s Dragon), the film stars Todd Armstrong in his biggest role, but not his jabber, as that was dubbed over by Tim Turner, a British actor who did a lot of impart over work on film trailers, including the trailer for this film. Also appearing is Nancy Kovack (The Silencers), and a whole bunch of British actors including Gary Raymond (El Cid), Laurence Naismith (The Valley of Gwangi), Niall MacGinnis (Night of the Demon), Jack Gwillim (Patton), Nigel Green (Countess Dracula), and Honor Blackman (Goldfinger), to name a few.

As this fantasy record begins, we peep the spot of Jason as an infant, his father slain and kingdom usurped, as so the seemingly fickle Gods have decided. Jason grows up, returns to re-take the land and peoples that are rightfully his, only to be sent on a quest, by the Gods (geez, who died and made them Gods? Oh yeah…they ARE Gods), to recover a golden fleece, one that would bring peace and prosperity to the terrorized land. Only pickle is the fleece is across the world, to where no one has sailed before. To meet this goal, Jason has the finest ship built, and gathers the greatest athletes Greece has to offer, and sets out on a uncertain shuffle that involves uncertain waters, distinguished bronze titans, a deadly, multi-headed Hydra, an army of skeleton warriors (can seven really be considered an army? Maybe more like a task force…), and treachery within his enjoy ranks, among other things (as if that wasn’t enough) . The quest seems an impossible one, but with Jason’s determination, the loyalty of his men (the non-treasonous ones, of course), and even a minute abet from the Gods themselves, he honest may be able to survive and return with the love to reclaim what is rightfully his, and bring and destroy to the tyrant reign that has plagued his lands for the past twenty irregular years.

Alright, I will say some of the acting isn’t all that stout (actress Kovack seems to be on some kind of depressant, as her performance is about as deadpan as I’ve seen), and some of the non-Harryhausen special effects are extremely noticeable (the matte usage in some scenes stands out a lot more than they probably would have liked), but despite these points, this is really a fun and racy movie. There are elements of the anecdote missing (the 2000 television CGI-laden version starring Jason London was a bit more inclusive in this respect, but lacked the charm, for me at least, of this one), but the makers of this film did manage to cram a lot into its’ 104 small running time, and the expedient direction kept the chronicle enchanting along at a rousing inch, rarely slowing down, and keeping my interest. I did appreciate the sets (especially those on Mount Olympus, and I have to say, Honor Blackman makes for one sexy Goddess, playing Hera, Zeus’ wife…hotchie momma!) and the state shots where incredible, adding a lot to the legend. The Argo (the boat that carried Jason and his crew, hence the term `Argonauts’) was sterling, although that figurehead of Hera (she was one of the Gods assisting Jason) freaked me out, especially with the opening an closing of its’ eyelids. And I can’t review this film without mentioning the work of legendary Hollywood composer Bernard Herrmann (Citizen Kane, The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, The Day the Earth Stood Composed, Psycho, Taxi Driver) …well, I mentioned him…but seriously, it’s sparkling rare to win a composer as `in tune’ with the material he’s working with as Herrmann (deem how different Psycho would be without its’ homely find) . The best parts of the film, by far, are the stop-motion effects by Harryhausen. What makes his work so capable, in my plan, is not only his discover for meticulous detail (it would often acquire months to gain a 3 or 4 exiguous on conceal segment of stop-motion work), but also his ability to do the appropriate movements for the characters he was presenting. An example within the context of the film is Talos, the bronze titan, compared to, say, the winged harpies. The character of Talos moved exactly how you would inquire a giant made of bronze to depart, rigid, lumbering, and generally tedious, compared to the very fluid and challenging movements of the winged harpies, or even the multi-headed Hydra creature. It’s the supposition of how the creatures would recede, infused with the created models that place Harryhausen apart from his peers, and made him a account in his gain time, influencing so many others that came after him. It’s ravishing rare to examine stop-motion work in major films nowadays, as it’s been replaced with computer generated images (which is probably cheaper and less time challenging, but can often appear unbiased as unrealistic as lesser stop-motion work) .

Buy,Download, Or Stream Jason and the Argonauts! Click Here

The report looks attractive first-rate on this DVD, and is available in both widescreen (1.85:1) and fleshy mask pan and scan formats. The audio, Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono, is relatively certain throughout. Special features include subtitles (English, French, and Spanish), the modern theatrical trailer, short production notes inside the case, and a lengthy interview with Ray Harryhausen conducted by John Landis, featuring clips, detached photos, and even a prop or two from the films.

This station will be awesome

For those of you unusual to all things Babylon 5, here is my rush down of this set:

1. THE GATHERING - As the series pilot it is a decent grief. It’s best to glimpse this one before watching Season One but it’s aesthetic if you fetch it anytime. In fact this one is worth viewing again after watching seasons 1-3 to regain A LOT of foreshadowing. You can’t realize the of traps JMS has plot impartial in this pilot. I give this one 3.5/5.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Babylon 5 - The Movie Collection! Click Here

2. IN THE BEGINNING - Holy crap! 5/5. By far the best trouble of JMS and his crew, second only to Severed Dreams (episode in Season 3) . Anyone can thoroughly luxuriate in this this one without ever seeing one episode of Babylon 5 (like my wife) there are some expansive spoilers. So do yourself a Astronomical favor. Do not glimpse this movie until after you have completed Seasons 1 through 3. Also, this one features Chris Franke’s best catch. This one alone is nearly worth the retract designate.

3. THIRDSPACE - I like this one more than many others might. It introduces a H.P. Lovecraft type of element to the Babylon 5 universe. Personally I really like this fresh wrinkle and wish that it received further exploration. Salvage this one after about the 7 episode in Season 4. This one features a crazy (perhaps even ridiculous) battle scene and a girl fight at the ruin that is well worth seeing. 4/5.

4. RIVER OF SOULS - A chronicle about the Soul Hunters (introduced early in Season One) . Martin Sheen is in it (a bit of a miscast for some people) . Gaze this before the last episode of Season 5 (Sleeping In Light) . I like Franke’s rep alot. This one focuses more on some of the peripheral characters like Lochley and Zach which makes for a nice change IMHO. Tracy Scoggins in lingerie = yummy! Also, another series regular has a terrific performance at the climax that should not be missed. 3.5/5.

5. CALL TO ARMS - This is meant to aid as the transition to JMS’s next Babylon 5 series: CRUSADE. IMHO, Chen’s fetch is totaly out of dwelling and is a distraction. The effects are not as proper as the other films as well. On other hand, there are some unique and enchanting characters (many which become fraction of the Crusade series) introduced that unruffled do this one worth watching. Peter Woodward and Tony Todd really shine in this one. 3/5

The release of Babylon 5 The Movies on DVD marks the closing of the critically acclaimed Babylon 5 series, arguably one of the best Science Fiction series to date. Having said that, it’s critical to remember that this box state should not be viewed as a starting point for first-time Babylon 5 viewers.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Babylon 5 - The Movie Collection! Click Here

As indicated by the editor’s review, the only DVD that can be viewed first is ‘The Gathering’, the reworked pilot which is beneficial as an introduction to the universe and the characters. The other movies were made either during or after the conclusion of the B5 series and as such have many elements that would completely extinguish a first-time viewer’s experience of the five year arc.

The movies ‘In The Beginning’, ‘Thirdspace’, ‘River of Souls’ and ‘A Call to Arms’ are all welcome additions to the existing B5 universe, allowing us to look impartial how far the characters have developed through the series. Although the self-contained nature of ‘Thirdspace’ and ‘River of Souls’ in particular do not provide the level of mounting suspense that we’re weak to in the series, they’re mild worth watching and allow the B5 flame to burn unbiased that cramped bit longer.

To summarise: If you are a first-time Babylon 5 viewer, you would be better off to grasp the single DVD ‘Gathering / In The Beginning’, behold ONLY ‘The Gathering’ and then work your device through the season DVD box sets before spellbinding onto the movies. If you are a fan or have a genuine concept of the B5 universe, this is an qualified companion to the five B5 season sets.

Palmer shows us Carl Orff the man on all his facets, the genuine and the dubious. As expected from Palmer, he delivers it artistically, with the lawful amount of aesthetic scenes as well as the repulsive ones; the puppets and the hands performance are fair great; the short clips of the Nazi era are also well placed and relevant to the sage at play. This documentary goes to big length to present Orff’s contribution to education through his Schulwerk (Schoolwork) and its dissemination through the world. Orff’s music is mature extensively through the film, but I was a miniature bet disappointed that it is not described or talked about too grand. Obviously Carmina Burana is explained in terms of his history and background, but no about the music itself. For example, any correlation to Stravinsky’s music is not mentioned at all, and there certainly is! Carl Orff the man was exactly that, a man with virtues and guilt. What endures in time, aside of the Schulwerk, is his music, somehow missing in this otherwise mammoth documentary.

Every Tony Palmer film is worth the investment. “O Fortuna” is no exception. For the best and most lively DVD’s on the lives of musicians stick with Tony Palmer.

I first saw parts of this DVD on PBS and was so intrigued with it, I went immediately to the web area and ordered it. This has to be a ‘must purchase’ for anybody who is wanting to learn what it is like to prepare for a substantial concert of a major work.

Michael Tilson Thomas brings the viewer remarkable insight as to what he is trying to finish from his interpretation of this very familiar portion. Shrimp things such as suggesting a different bow movement makes a gargantuan dissimilarity in the presentation.

I highly recommend this and hope this is only the first in a series. ‘Twould be nice to scrutinize other orchestras doing this with other presentations as well!

I can’t praise this DVD highly enough for those who are provocative about how a conductor and orchestra prepare and place together a performance of a symphonic work, in this case the resplendent Tchaikovsky Fourth Symphony. We pick up a very excellent — and at times amusing, and always genial — narration by Michael Tilson Thomas as he prepares a performance with his orchestra, the San Francisco Symphony (which is surely one of the country’s huge orchestras although it is not generally listed, wrongly so in my concept, with the so-called Mountainous Five American orchestras) . We also focus in on several of the individual players to glean out how they prepare for the rehearsals. There is also a scene in which the orchestra talks with a group of children about how the orchestra works, and this includes a droll moment where the piccolo player discusses how nervous she gets playing that incredibly difficult solo in the the Tchaikovsky Fourth’s third movement. The rehearsal scenes are then followed by an engrossing and fully satisfying live performance of the fragment in San Francisco’s good Davies Symphony Hall. Sound and video are friendly.

I’ve attended many rehearsals of orchestras and this DVD certainly catches the feeling of this intricate and complex team project. I assume it would be very savory for anyone alive to in this general subject.

Recommended.

I was so elated to gawk this DVD. Never having seen the film before, it was a staunch treat.

Don’t let the coarse budget or the Roger Corman and William Shatner names maintain you from seeing this film.

A unlit and white documentary-style telling about the early days of integration, “The Intruder” follows the efforts of Patrick Henry Society rabble-rouser Adam Cramer (Shatner), as he tries to convince a exiguous Southern town to fight against court-ordered integration of local schools.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Intruder! Click Here

Worming his map into the hearts of the townspeople, he soon finds that his racist views can lead to outcomes that cannot always be predicted or controlled.

Written by Charles Beaumont, a immense hand late “The Twilight Zone”, every moment is filled with tension thanks in no little fraction to Shatner’s presence.

Shatner gives a extraordinary performance as the racist villian. For those who mediate his only contribution to entertainment to be Captain Kirk or T.J. Hooker, they have a beneficial surprise awaiting them.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Intruder! Click Here

Here is a young Shatner, a valorous Shatner, a Shatner with youthful energy, even at times a subtle Shatner, five years or so away from the role that made him a pop icon. His stage training serves him well in the role of Cramer, and his stage roots prove. His speech on the town hall steps is monstrous and mesmerizing and believable.

Truly a very considerable work, both socially and culturally, every scene of “The Intruder” is a lesson for film students, history students, and anyone alive to in the struggle of the Civil Rights Era. The film should be mandatory viewing in high school history classes.

Included on the disc is a discussion between Shatner and Corman as they discuss the film, the dangers of shooting the film in the South at that time, how clear scenes were shot, and other behind-the-scenes reminiscences.

I came upon this film by chance on tv, and was stupefied by how well it was executed. Not only does this deal with a tough shriek on racism, it portrays two sides of a coin. I don’t want to give away the site, but it is well worth checking out. Arguably the most primary film Roger Corman has attempted. I assume he succeeded. I am also a lifelong Coast fan, and as considerable as I care for Shatner’s performances in Dash II and Classic series, I contain this to be his finest performance. nuff said…

Jim Varney in one of his best misadventures! The story-line is absolutely hysterical…Jim Carrey and the young Jerry Lewis couldn’t have done it better!

Critics choose tag..there is no such thing as “low-brow” comedy..educated people call it slapstick, and not everyone can do it well. Jim Varney had a “gift”, and he knew how to consume it…combining this modern narrative with his personality and antics resulted in a gut busting Comical film.

I have seen countless vast comedies that rush the gamut, from The Stooges to Woody Allen. “Ernest Goes To Jail” is honest up there with the best comdeies you could possess! Too abominable it’s not on DVD.

This movie is reminiscent of classic comedies of the 60’s. Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell have improbable chemistry, but so many amusing moments you will laugh out loud. Goldie learning how to be a homemaker is priceless, and she does the physical comedy so well. This movie flows continuously from beginning to slay. It does not roam in any section. It is a keeper, and a qualified addition to any collection.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Overboard! Click Here

No matter how many times I search for this movie (and maintain me, I’ve watched it many, many, many times) it’s always delectable. Goldie Hawn stars as Joanna Stayton, an incrediblly rich, incredibly bored and incredibly bitchy woman with nothing left to do while her yacht is docked at a shrimp coastal Oregon town called Elk’s Cove but to hire a carpenter named Dean Proffitt (Kurt Russell, gotta admire him) to remodel her closet. But when the job isn’t done to her satisfaction, he winds up overboard along with all his tools. He vows to score revenge on her and the opportunity presents itself when Joanne falls overboard in the middle of the night and is later discovered by a crew of Portuguese men on a garbage barge. But Joanna has amnesia and can’t remember who she is. And her husband Grant is all to tickled to pretend he doesn’t know her and leave her in the hospital. But when Dean sees the “amnesia lady” on the news, he recognizes Joanna and hatches a belief to fetch revenge and net the money she owes him. But neither one expects to tumble in admire with the other. Overboard is a fun and comic movie that also teaches us the lesson that money doesn’t prefer us complete happiness. It can for you though if you capture Overboard because it’s worth watching hundreds of times over. I esteem it! Indulge In!

Claire Marrable, a destitute widow, finds a procedure to withhold herself living the edifying life by hiring a series of housekeepers whom she eventually murders, steals their life savings and buries them in her desert pine tree garden. An incredibly fun movie which derives pleasure from the lead actors. Geraldine Page (as Mrs. Marrable) and Ruth Gordon (as Alice Dimmock, the latest housekeeper who is actually trying to salvage out what happened to her friend who mysteriously vanished while working for Marrable) chew the scenery to the hilt and it is so great fun watching the interactions between the two. Contemplate Page’s reaction when Gordon tells her the amount in her savings myth - priceless! The film as a whole suffers somewhat from some tiresome supporting characters and a dull romantic sub-plot moving Gordon’s nephew and Page’s neighbor. Smooth worth it for the acting dynamo of Page and Gordon and even Mildred Dunnock manages some nice moments in her few scenes. And you’ll never forget the frenetic zither music derive!

The quality of the dvd is very excellent. The record is though-provoking and the colors are strong. The only extra feature is a trailer for the film which delivers the memorable tag-line - “Whatever happened to Aunt Alice is more shocking than what happened to Baby Jane”!

In the early 1960s director Robert Aldrich teamed aging stars Bette Davis and Joan Crawford in a suspense thriller called “Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? ” The movie was a demolish hit. Two or three years later he brought the two actresses support for “Hush, Hush, Sweet Charlotte”. Crawford dropped out and was replaced by Olivia De Havilland. Again, Aldrich struck pay dirt. In 1969 his production company made yet another such movie, “Whatever Happened to Aunt Alice? “, starring Geraldine Page and Ruth Gordon. This was directed by Lee H. Katzin. I don’t consider it was as successful at the boxoffice, but the famous thing is that Alice is almost as distinguished fun as Jane and Charlotte.

Page plays Claire, a woman of sixty or so. In the opening scenes she finds out that her recently deceased husband left her with virtually nothing. Aroused because her enormous lifestyle has ended, Claire moves to the American Southwest, where she cooks up a device. She hires frightened cramped archaic lady housekeepers and, over time, convinces them that she can beget them a lot of money in the stock market. Once an unsuspecting employee turns over her life savings, Claire kills her and buries her in her garden, marking each grave with a original pine tree. Soon the yard is filled with trees. One day a current housekeeper named Alice [Ruth Gordon] shows up. Alice, however, has an ulterior motive. One of the women was her friend, and Alice suspects that Claire is responsible for her disappearance. Thus begins a gargantuan game of cat and mouse.

Unlike Davis and Crawford, Page and Gordon were not movie stars fallen on hard times. They were substantial character actresses with extensive stage experience. Both had had an occasional starring role in films but had played mostly supporting roles over the years. They were older but hardly veteran. If anything, they were at the height of their popularity when they made “Alice”. They are the reason the movie, otherwise an strange melodrama, is unexcited worth seeing. Gordon is foul fun as Alice, playing the portion with factual professionalism, yet barely able to screen her glee and amusement at being in such a movie. But it is Page who dominates throughout. Her Claire is both hilarious and shaded. Sometimes she stalks, sometimes she slithers through the movie, reminding one of a rotten between a leopard and a cobra. She’s obviously having a huge time.

Other Geraldine Page movies I particularly like are “Summer and Smoke”, “The Hotfoot to Bountiful” and “Sweet Bird of Youth”. Vast Ruth Gordon movies include “Harold and Maude”, “Where’s Poppa? ” and, of course, “Rosemary’s Baby”.

Some comments for the technically-minded…

1) This was broadcast on HDNet for all of a couple weeks around the beginning of November. Thankfully they took advantage of this benefit- the DVD is enchanced for widescreen (anamorphic), as are the menus. Large plus.

2) This has a stereo PCM track. Meaning, if you purchase the DVD, you can beget a CD out of the soundtrack w/out needing to source lossy DD 5.1 surround. Greedy narrate companies charge $25 for the 2-cd audio-only recording, while the concert DVD featuring the precise same audio is only $14. This doesn’t happen grand anymore. From that destroy, this is a suitable deal all around.

3) Nice gesture from the band- releasing this concert seperately from Hipomymous (sp? ) box position, so a lot of us are not stuck buying the same music we already absorb. A breath of original air.

Outside of that, it’s the DVD we’ve been waiting for. Nicely done, if you’re reading this you know you want it.

You will not be dissappointed.

I saw the Hip live in Montreal on dec. 1st of 2004, at which time I knew the band fair a small…but WHAT A Exhibit! I was blown away by Gordon Downie’s stage presence and the pure, no-holds-barred, raw Rock’n Roll energy that the Band spread around the Bell Center. This live DVD was recorded 5 days earlier and is objective as awesome as the concert I saw…plus, the fact that there’s no editing on this disc-meaning that everything you behold is in “dependable time”-and the outrageous impress at which it is sold REALLY makes it worth it (…for Hip fans) .
